I admire those who have served in the military, and I especially admire those who have been soldiers. When I was in junior high school, I read a book by the renowned writer Wei Wei that has remained etched in my memory ever since: “Who Are the Loveliest People.” It is a heart-wrenching, deeply moving work. The central theme of the book is the story of how, during the great War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea, volunteer soldiers, driven by their boundless love for their country and their people, fearlessly sacrificed themselves and fought bravely to defeat the enemy, ultimately securing victory. In times of war, soldiers brave sacrifice and charge into the front lines; in times of peace, they guard the borders, respond to disasters and rescue victims, and safeguard the peace. Even after leaving the service, veterans retain the spirit and character of soldiers.
