Dongfeng Formwork: Pursuing Dreams in Africa

Africa is often associated with vast grasslands, boundless deserts, scorching weather, a rich wildlife ecosystem, and hardworking people. Since the launch of the Belt and Road Initiative in 2013, China’s multi-sectoral cooperation with African countries has accelerated markedly, reaching unprecedented levels of breadth and depth. With the support of Chinese enterprises, numerous projects—particularly major ones—have been successfully implemented. China and Ethiopia enjoy a long-standing relationship, and the Chinese side attaches great importance to consolidating and further developing their comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership. On October 5, 2016, the Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway (the Addis–Djibouti Railway), constructed by Chinese companies and linking the capitals of Ethiopia and Djibouti, was inaugurated.

The Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway is East Africa’s first electrified railway, constructed entirely to Chinese standards and using Chinese equipment. With a total length of 751.7 kilometers and a design speed of 120 kilometers per hour, it features 45 stations and represents a total investment of approximately US$4 billion. Construction was undertaken by China Railway Group and China State Construction Engineering Corporation, making it the first full-industry-chain “going global” railway project developed by Chinese enterprises overseas.

 

The Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway is a mixed passenger–freight line primarily dedicated to freight transport.
