Dongfeng Formwork: Pursuing Dreams in Africa

Africa is often associated with vast grasslands, boundless deserts, scorching weather, a rich wildlife ecosystem, and hardworking people. Since the launch of the Belt and Road Initiative in 2013, China’s multi-sectoral cooperation with African countries has accelerated markedly, reaching unprecedented levels of breadth and depth. With the support of Chinese enterprises, numerous projects—particularly major ones—have been successfully implemented. China and Ethiopia enjoy a long-standing relationship, and the Chinese side attaches great importance to consolidating and developing their comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership. The Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway (the Addis–Djibouti Railway), constructed by Chinese companies and linking the capitals of Ethiopia and Djibouti, was completed in 2016.

China and Ethiopia enjoy a long-standing relationship, and the Chinese side attaches great importance to consolidating and developing their comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership. The Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway, constructed by Chinese enterprises and linking the capitals of Ethiopia and Djibouti, was officially completed and opened to traffic on October 5, 2016. Following the Tanzania–Zambia Railway, this is another transnational railway built by China in Africa and has been hailed as the “Tanzania–Zambia Railway of the New Era.”

The Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway is East Africa’s first electrified railway, constructed entirely in accordance with Chinese standards and using Chinese equipment. With a total length of 751.7 kilometers and a design speed of 120 kilometers per hour, the line features 45 stations and represents a total investment of approximately US$4 billion. Construction was undertaken by China Railway Group and China State Construction Engineering Corporation, making it the first full-industry-chain “going global” railway project developed by Chinese enterprises overseas.

The Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway is a mixed passenger–freight line primarily dedicated to freight transport. During the construction of the railway, railway T-beam formwork, segmental assembly formwork, and pier column formwork manufactured by Dongfeng Shijing Formwork Group played a crucial role. The company’s comprehensive services—ranging from design and manufacturing to transportation and delivery, technical briefing, and on-site assembly guidance—were highly commended by the project owner.
